Abstract

The development of digital applications for healthier and more sustainable food is growing rapidly. These applications need to combine data from different sources, such as nutritional values, sustainability indicators and product characteristics. However, these sources are often difficult to compare or differ in structure and terminology. Wageningen Food & Biobased Research developed the Food Item Ontology (FIO) to solve this challenge. FIO offers a single, uniform, open source ontology that links data sources to the food items they relate to. This makes it easier for organisations, researchers and developers to organise, interpret and apply data within apps, dashboards and analyses. FIO is suitable for anyone who develops data-driven food innovations, such as app developers, governments, retailers and researchers. With the Food Item Ontology (FIO), data on different food topics from multiple databases can be gathered. These databases might have different definitions for food, but when connected to the concept of food item as defined in the FIO ontology, it becomes clear that the databases talk about the same thing. The FIO is currently used for a knowledge graph containing instance data from the NEVO database (Dutch Food Composition Database), but will be expanded with other datasets in the future.
